Finding Nemo
The DVD
A 2-disk set

. "Shark Tale"

Just when you thought the watery world of animation was safe, comes a copy-cat attempt that swamps you in a sea of cliches. It's not only the animation that's computer-generated, it's the story, the characters and the dialogue.

Robert DeNiro is so familiar with this role of a don-shark he could do it from a hyperbaric chamber while he's decompressing. The geniuses that tried to come up with a clone of the hugely successful "Finding Nemo" didn't understand that it isn't only about state-of-the-art animation.

But that's just an adult reaction. This kindergarten bait is going to flood the boxoffice because of a juvenile hunger for tidbits they can get their hooks into. Parents are going to appreciate it because of the comfortable stereotypes of the big bad gangster dissatisfied with a too-good offspring and an egotistical hipster with things to learn. Forget that the ideas of cool that are represented favor the trashy side, like deception, gambling and exhibitionism. Just so the kids can have a diversion for a couple of hours.

The worst thing about it is that the big receipts will encourage more such imitative exploitation.
